World Otter Day
WILD we are celebrating with our two lovebirds – Louie and Mahra, our Asian short-clawed otters!
These mischievous otters are the smallest of the 13 otter species, but they have some of the biggest personalities at WILD. If they’re not splashing in their pool or squeaking for snacks, you will find Louie searching for the best rock to gift to Mahra.
But World Otter Day is about more than just playful antics. It’s a vital opportunity to raise awareness about otter conservation.
Asian short-clawed otters are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, facing threats from habitat loss, pollution, and the illegal pet trade. Sadly, they’re not alone – 12 out of the 13 otter species worldwide are declining, and many are threatened or endangered due to similar pressures.
The International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF) is dedicated to protecting all otter species through research, education, and habitat preservation. You can donate to support their work here https://www.otter.org/
